For several weeks students around the Quad Cities have been collecting food for a local food bank all while competing against rival schools to collect the most.
Wednesday, November 6, 2013 was day one of two loading days where all schools participating in the Student Hunger Drive delivered six weeks’ worth of food collection. All food collected during the drive is being given to the River Bend Food Bank in Moline.
On Thursday the final total for the 28th annual Student Hunger Drive will be revealed. Awards will also be presented to division winners.
Students collected in different ways, like Cami Beard from United Township, and found support from the community.
“My family is very supportive,” said Pleasant Valley senior, Tegan Hoover. “We’ve gone out trick or treating for cans. Just me and my family are sitting at Hy-Vee for hours in the cold. So I think everybody in my family is supportive of it.”
The River Bend Food Bank has distributed 70 million pounds of food since its foundation in 1982. Thursday night's finale starts at 5:30 p.m. at the food bank.
