Senate Bill 10, or the Marriage Equality Bill, passed the Illinois House and Senate Tuesday, November 5th, 2013.
The Illinois House passed the bill with one vote to spare. The Illinois Senate approved the bill later on that night.
The bill paves the way for same-sex couples to get married in Illinois.
If the governor signs it into law, Illinois will become the 15th state in the country to allow same-sex marriage. Iowa already allows same-sex marriage.
"I think it's great. Hopefully, other states will follow," Moline resident Chris Gowdy said. "I think partners, gay or lesbian, should have the same rights as everyone else in this country."
Governor Pat Quinn supports the measure and is expected to sign the bill in the next ten days. Quinn signed civil union legislation for Illinois in 2011.
"Illinois is a place that embraces all people and today, we are an example for the nation," Quinn said.
The Illinois Marriage Equality law goes into effect June 1st, 2014.
