After the mayor of Thompson died, voters in the town decided to honor their incumbent mayor by voting him in one last time.

According to a report by Radio Iowa, Mayor Roger W. Johnson won the race on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 just days after he passed away. Johnson’s name was the only candidate on the ballot.

Radio Iowa reported that Johnson received 11 votes, and 37 votes went to write-in candidates; but no one candidate had more votes than Johnson.

Until a mayor is chosen, Mayor Pro-Tem Jeff Hughes will serve in the position. According to City Clerk Diane Adams, at their next meeting, the City Council will decide how to name a new mayor.

Johnson had served as the mayor of Thompson for the past eight years, according to the report.
