The man police say led them on a chase in Ames, Iowa died from injuries he suffered when he crashed and was shot during a pursuit.
Police say 19-year-old Tyler Comstock, of Boone, Iowa, was driving a pickup truck with a trailer and refused to stop when police tried to pull him over just after 10 a.m. Monday, November 4, 2013.
Comstock allegedly backed the pickup and trailer into a police car and then took off, leading police on a pursuit that traveled onto the campus of Iowa State University. The trailer eventually separated from the truck during the pursuit.
Police said police attempted to ram the truck, and vice-versa, during the pursuit.
The truck crashed into a tree at ISU. Comstock reportedly did not comply with commands from police to shut off the truck, and Comstock allegedly tried again to ram officers with the truck.
That’s when Ames Police Officer Adam McPherson fired six shots at the truck. Police Commander Geoff Huff said that was the first time McPherson had fired his weapon at a suspect.
Comstock was hit by at least one round. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
McPherson, who has been with the Ames Police Department for more than eight years, was put on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation of the shooting.
Huff said the truck Comstock was driving was stolen from a lawn care company. Comstock allegedly took the truck immediately after an argument he had with his father.
Huff said his department was not immediately aware of anyone else injured as a result of the pursuit.
