Galesburg attorney returns to post as judge in Illinois 9th Circuit

A Galesburg attorney has agreed to return from retirement to serve on the Ninth Circuit in Illinois.

Retired former Chief Judge Stephen Mathers will fill a seat vacated by the retirement of Judge Edward Danner.

Mathers worked in private practice at a Galesburg law firm and is a member of the Knox County, Illinois State and American bar associations.  Mathers was first elected a circuit judge in 1980 and he was retained by voters four times.  He served as chief judge of the Ninth Circuit from 2006 to 2009 and retired from the bench in 2010.

Mathers’ assignment is effective November 12, 2013 and terminates December 1, 2014 when the position will be filled by the 2014 General Election.

The Ninth Judicial Circuit includes Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Knox, McDonough and Warren counties.
