Celebrators of life gathered in Davenport for a Día de los Muertos themed 5k.

The first annual Día de los Muertos 5k was held on Saturday, November 2, 2013, sponsored by Casa Quad Cities. The run acts as a fundraiser for Casa’s family services and as a celebration.

“We are here to celebrate life really,” said Executive Director of Casa QC Michael Woods. “That’s what Casa’s about, is helping families celebrate life.”

Día de los Muertos, or All Souls Day, is a historical holiday in the Latino community, according to Woods. It’s a chance to rejoice in life and celebrate ancestors who have passed-on.

Woods said all cultures and ethnic groups were welcome to participate in the run and help celebrate the day.

Money raised from the race goes to family initiatives and the arts and culture programs through Casa Quad Cities.
