A total of $10,000 is being offered as part of an expansion to the Ascentra Credit Union Scholarship Competition. The competition is for members looking to further their education.

According to Ascentra’s community development coordinator, ten scholarships will be awarded for the 2014 – 2015 school year.

Five $1,000 scholarships will be given to high school students heading into college and five $1,000 scholarships will be given to members that are 19 and older who are considered non-traditional or continuing-education students.

“On behalf of our board of directors and staff we are very excited to announce the expansion of our Ascentra Scholarship Programs,” said President and CEO Dale Owen. “This is a great opportunity to help more of our members achieve their goals through furthering their education.”

Applicants will be judged on their submission of a 500-word essay on the topic, “Credit Unions were founded on the premise of people helping people. If it were up to you, how would you let the world know of this founding philosophy?”

Along with the essay, entrants will be judged on their resume, awards, extracurricular activities, volunteer services and work experience.

The deadline is March 1, 2014.
