The governor of Iowa is working toward making college more affordable for students.
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad would like to freeze tuition rates for undergraduates enrolled in state universities, according to a report by the Des Moines Register.
On Thursday, October 24, 2013 the governor said he’d “love” to see a tuition freeze. According to the report, during an Iowa Board of Regents meeting at the University of Iowa, Branstad said proposing a year of no tuition increases would depend on December’s annual budget estimate and state agencies’ funding requests. If Branstad did recommend a tuition freeze, it would be Iowa’s second consecutive year of no tuition increases.
According to the Des Moines Register, overseers of Iowa’s universities said a tuition freeze would require a 4-percent tax increase, or about $20 million.
A vote is scheduled for December to decide whether or not tuition rates for 2014-2015 will rise.
