A fraternity at Augie in Rock Island is turning a Halloween tradition into a way to help others.

Gamma Alpha Beta at Augustana College carved pumpkins for local businesses in exchange for donations which will be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

“During the week and everything we are regular students and we actually have a lot of leadership qualities since we have positions in the fraternity and we do give back a lot from the Quad Cities,” said Gamma Alpha Beta Service Chair, Mike Mertel. “Last year Greek life at Augustana alone did $15,000 of service in the communities.”

When the collection is complete the fraternity will travel to Memphis to deliver the money in person.
