A national initiative is providing a safe and convenient way to get rid of unused prescription drugs.

According to The Connection, a publication from the Iowa Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy, the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013. Any unused or expired medications will be accepted at several locations.

The Aledo, Muscatine, Kewanee, and Iowa City Police Departments are just a few of the many drop-off locations available for Take Back Day. Click here to search for a collection location near you.

Director of the Iowa Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy, Steve Lukan, said the prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing form of substance abuse in the state. It is estimated that 70-percent of misused medicines come from a person’s friends or family.

“By disposing of unused medicines around our homes, we can safeguard our children from prescription drug abuse and protect our environment too.”

Take Back Day will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
