A “suspicious item” that caused a portion of Iowa State University to be evacuated ended up being harmless.

The item that was found on campus on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 turned out to be a “sock over a piece of Styrofoam,” according to the Iowa State University Police Department’s Facebook page.

Updates on the ISU Police Department’s Facebook page indicated that the item was found in the morning and that the State Fire Marshall’s Office was on site to assist ISU Police.

An update on ISU Police Department’s Facebook page written around 3 p.m. on Wednesday said that an initial x-ray showed that the material inside the sock could be a piece of metal or plastic. The State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the item was a piece of hollow Styrofoam.

The Tir Asleen Medieval Combat Society on campus shared on the department’s Facebook page that the item was a prop used on Tuesday during a practice.
