The recently-repainted Silvis water tower is among the leading contenders in a contest to choose the 2013 Tank of the Year.

Nearly 200 water tanks and towers from across the country made up the field of contenders in the contest held by Tnemec, the company that makes the paint used to beautify the competing tanks and water towers.

The competition includes water towers in and around the Quad Cities area such as Burlington, Iowa; Coal Valley, Illinois; Dixon, Illinois; Freeport, Illinois; North Liberty, Iowa; Princeton, Illinois; Silvis, Illinois and Tiffin, Iowa.

The 12 tanks with the most votes will be featured in a free promotional 2014 water tank calendar the company is creating.

Late Friday morning, October 11, the competition was close between Silvis with 17.45% of the votes cast and Mt. Vernon, Illinois with 17.98% of the votes.

Voting is open from October 7 until 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2013.
