Police say a 12-year-old boy was hit by a truck after the child failed to stop at a marked intersection.

Police said the boy was westbound on Fourth Avenue when he “failed to yield at the stop intersection and drove into the path” of a truck that was southbound on South Main Street at about 7:15 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013.

The right front corner of the truck collided with the bike, and the boy riding it was thrown from the bicycle.

The boy was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Monmouth and later airlifted to a hospital in Peoria for treatment of “serious injuries,” according to police.

The driver of the truck, a 65-year-old Monmouth man, was not injured.
