Undocumented immigrants will now be able to get a driver’s license in Illinois.
According to the Illinois Government News Network, in January of 2013, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for their driver’s license. Beginning in December, applicants can schedule appointments at state DMVs to obtain a three-year Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL).
Governor Quinn said allowing immigrants to get their licenses will make the roads safer and create more access to jobs, strengthening the economy.
“Driving means taking responsibility for your safety and the safety of others on the road,” Governor Quinn said. “This common sense law will help everybody, regardless of their background, learn the rules of the road, pass a driving test and get insurance.”
It is estimated that there are 250,000 unlicensed immigrants on the roadways in Illinois. According to the Illinois Highway Safety Coalition, unlicensed and uninsured drivers in Illinois are involved in nearly 80,000 accidents per year.
“Individuals who are already driving to work, school and worship services will be able to do so without fear of unnecessary and costly incarceration,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said.

According to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, the TVDL is for driving purposes only, and is not a valid form of ID.
