Rocky seniors contend for National Merit Scholarships

Three Rocky students have been recognized for their academic performance.

A spokesperson from the Rock Island School District said that senior, Andrew Calder was selected as a National Merit Scholar Semi-finalist. Seniors Hannah Rodgers and Jinesh Shah were named as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise.

To be considered a finalist, a scholarship application must be submitted from the student and their high school. Applications include the student’s academic record, school and extracurricular activities, leadership abilities, honors, and awards.

Over $32 million in scholarships will be awarded. Finalists will have to compete for one of the 8,300 available scholarships, which include the National Merit $2,500 scholarships, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.

Calder is participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange program and spending his last high school year in Hungary.

Scholarships recipients will be announced from April to July 2014.
