Smoke from a burning corn field between Sherrard and Orion could be seen from more than ten miles away.

Smoke from a burning corn field between Sherrard and Orion could be seen from more than ten miles away.

The fire was reported just after 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2013 near where 176th Avenue, or Sherrard Orion Road, intersects with E. 150th Street.

Corn had already been harvested at the farm, but the fire burned soybeans that were still in the ground.  The fire damaged an estimated 15 acres of crop land.

Smoke from the fire was visible at the Quad City International Airport, more than ten miles from the fire scene.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.  A fire chief on the scene speculated it might have been started by a piece of farm equipment in the dry field.

No injuries were immediately reported.
