Iowans walk toward being nation’s healthiest state

Thousands of Iowa residents took a walk with health in mind.

Across Iowa, residents took part in the third Healthiest State Walk on Wednesday, October 09, 2013. The occasion was planned in part to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016, according to a report by WHO.

“I’m thrilled with the progress we’ve made as a state,” said Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. “As you’ve heard, since we started this Healthiest State Initiative, we’ve gone from 19th to 9th in the Gallup Health Ways Wellbeing index.”

Different groups of people get together to walk for their state and for their own health.

“I wanted to offer something on the east side of the community,” said Hy-Vee Dietition, Anne Hytrek. She started a walking group after the first Healthiest State Walk two years prior.

Ladies in the group said the walks have been successful, losing pounds and gaining more healthy habits.

“I’ve learned how to eat healthy,” said walker Connie Helton. “I’ve laid off the sweets. I don’t drink pop that much anymore.”

If you took a walk during the third Healthiest State Walk, you are asked to report it here.
