A semi broadsided a car that was reportedly backing into an intersection along Highway 61 just north of Maquoketa, Iowa.

Police said the car was headed eastbound toward the entrance of Hurstville Road as it crossed the northbound lane of Highway 61 at about 7 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013.  The car got across the northbound lanes but then stopped because the driver didn’t think she could get past cleanup work in the intersection from a separate wreck that happened earlier in the day.

The car driver, a 22-year-old Maquoketa woman, backed up and the car was hit broadside by a northbound semi driven by a 47-year-old man from Eldridge.

Police said the car spun into the median; the semi continued through the intersection and went into the ditch where it struck a drainage culvert and the trailer broke, spilling the hazardous material it was hauling.

Police did not identify the hazardous material.   The Davenport Hazardous Materials Response Team handled part of the cleanup from the crash.  The wreck and subsequent cleanup temporarily closed northbound Highway 61.

The semi driver, as well as the 22-year-old car driver and a 15-year-old passenger in the car were taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
