Iowa wrestler faces state charges for illegal hunting

A University of Iowa wrestler cited for shooting a duck now faces state charges for failing to register a harvested deer.

A University of Iowa wrestler cited for shooting a duck now faces state charges for failing to register a harvested deer.

Ethen Lofthouse, a senior from Avon, Utah, was cited by the Iowa DNR after he shot a duck October 4, 2013 in the back yard of his home in western Iowa City.  Police said a mallard duck had been shot and taken into the garage at the home.  Lofthouse reportedly admitted to shooting the duck and said he intended to eat it.

Lofthouse was cited then with violating a city ordinance for discharging his bow.  He was also cited for taking the duck without the proper permits.  The DNR also cited Lofthouse for illegally taking the duck out of season and without the required federal and state migratory bird stamps.

The DNR reported October 8 they also cited Lofthouse with five counts of failure to register harvested deer with the DNR.

“Officers say Lofthouse shot the deer while taking part in the city of Coralville deer management zone hunt, which has been underway since September 14,” according to a release from the DNR.  By law he was required to register the harvest with the DNR before midnight on the day after it was tagged.

Lofthouse is an All-American wrestler who placed fifth at the 2012-2013 NCAA Championships and third at the Big Ten Championships that year according to the University of Iowa.
