Maybe it is because you can be just about anything you want to be, even if it’s peanut butter and jelly.

Or maybe it’s the creepiness of it all-- the red eyed monster, the granny you would never let touch your kids.

Or maybe it’s as simple as, “It's a fun event and people want to go out and have fun,” said Halloween Express Manager and Owner Eric Dany.

Whatever it is, people like to spend money on Halloween.

“I see them taking out their pocket books and buying costumes,” said Dany.

“It's just as much enjoyable for us to see them happy. That's worth more money than anything,” said Allen Long, who bought costumes for his two sons.

The National Retail Federation says the average person will spend $75.03 on Halloween this year. That is down from $79.82 from 2012. 25% of the people the National Retail Federation surveyed said the economy will impact their Halloween spending.

But that is not the case for everyone.

“No not really. Quad Cities is doing very well and our store is doing very well,” said Dany.

“Not us, not us no. This is a fun time of the year no matter how good or bad the economy is,” said Long, “We normally spend around $40 a year. This year we're looking at about $75, $80 for both the costumes,” he added.

Just over $1 billion will be spent on children’s costumes this year and $330 million will be spent on pets.

“I don't know if it's spending so much money necessarily as it is related to having fun,” said Dany.

Because while the economy may be slowing down their spending, it is not keeping them out of the Halloween stores.

In terms of decorating, Halloween comes in second behind Christmas. $1.96 billion will be spent on decorations.
