The family of a Rock Island mother charged in connection with the death of her baby say they believe medical reports will clear her.
Eighteen-year-old Leila Martin made a brief court appearance on Tuesday morning, October 1, 2013. Her attorney Jack Schwartz was granted a delay on her preliminary hearing until later this month.
Martin and her boyfriend, Lavail Dunbar, 20, are both charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery of a child in the death of her 4-month old son, Jeremiah.
The little boy suffered several skull fractures and other head trauma, after paramedics transported him to the hospital earlier this month. Sources say there was also evidence of trauma in the anal area.
Martin was granted a furlough from the Rock Island County Jail last week to attend her son's funeral.
Martin's mother says autopsy results will help exonerate the teenaged mother, and put the blame on her boyfriend.
"I think the autopsy report will be something big, something that will clear her," Morrison said after court Tuesday.
"It's hard to bury your grandson and then have your daughter locked up for something she didn't do," she said.
Preliminary hearings for both Martin and Dunbar were continued until later this month.
Both are being held in the Rock Island County Jail on one-million dollars bond.
