Long-awaited construction is underway for the Ferris wheel attraction at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa.

The Ferris wheel, a zip line and a carousel are among the new additions to the park approved by the Davenport City Council in early 2013.

The Ferris wheel will be outside the park past left field behind the LeClaire Park Bandshell.  Kid-friendly activities including bounce houses were added along the right-field line in 2013, and a carousel is also planned for that area.  A zip line was also installed, running from right to left field.

Original plans included opening the Ferris wheel in the summer of 2013, but ground preparation was delayed by repeated flooding in the spring.

When it is built, the Ferris wheel will be elevated to avoid flooding along the Mississippi River.

Dave Heller, managing partner of the company that owns the team, said they hope to attract people to the extra entertainment options before games and on non-game days.

Davenport Public Works Director Mike Clarke said the contractor began installing temporary fencing around the Ferris wheel site on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.  Drilling was expected to begin before the end of that week.
