A road that has been the scene of several deadly accidents and that many residents call dangerous is about to get a makeover.

“It’s a very nasty place,” said Edward Anthony, who has lived on Illinois Route 92 for 35 years.

“It’s very narrow. There’s chunks of highway right out of the road,” said Gary Marti, who has lived in a house on Illinois Route 92 since 1973.

“Probably one of the worst roads in the state,” said Andalusia Mayor Curtis Morrow.
“Yes, it certainly needs improving. Quite a few accidents over the years right here,” said Bill Holmgren.

Bill and Anne Holmgren have lived on this stretch of Illinois Route 92 for 10 years.

“Anne’s mother lived here. My mother lived here. We live here. It’s got a lot of good memories really,” said Bill Holmgren.

But by November 1, 2013, they’ll have to move out of their old house and into a new one, just feet away.

“Don’t have much choice really,” said Holmgren.

That’s because Illinois Route 92 will soon come right up against the Holmgren’s current home.

According to a statement from the Office of Governor Pat Quinn, $6.2 million will be awarded for an Andalusia construction project. Illinois Route 92 will be widened and resurfaced for 4.05 miles from four-tenths of a mile north of Brights Court to 115th Street in Andalusia.

“We’re ecstatic about it, it’s long overdue,” said Mayor Morrow.

Those that live on the road agree.

“All I can say is it’s way over due. None of my family has been killed, but I’ve seen a lot of other people killed,” said Anthony.

“I think it’s about time,” said Marti.

All have stories about accidents they’ve seen and are ready for something to be done, so they don’t have to tell another story.

“Ended up over here in our yard.,” said Marti.

“The guy was trapped in there and pinned in the truck,” said Anne Holmgren.

“Not nice to see someone dead, you can’t do anything about it,” said Anthony.
