As theaters are being pushed to switch to digital projection, Honda is giving away digital projectors in a contest. A drive-in theater in Galva is asking for votes so they can win a projector before it’s too late.

Honda’s Project Drive-In has added four more digital projectors to its giveaway and has extended the voting to end on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 11 p.m.

The Galva Autovue Drive-In Theatre is asking for votes to keep the business going. Currently using 35 millimeter film, the owner Justin West would have to convert to digital to keep going, costing roughly $70,000. West said making that change would be nearly impossible for a business that is open only on weekends for less than half of the year.

“If you don’t make the conversion, and Hollywood stops making 35 millimeter prints — you’re done, you can’t show any movies,” said West.

Five drive-ins have already been selected, including the McHenry Outdoor Theater in McHenry, Illinois.
