Under the Friday night lights, the Maquoketa and Anamosa football game was less about winning and losing and much more about a lesson in giving.

“It's the fact that we want to do things to make others feel better,” said Kevin Bowman, Maquoketa High School’s Head Football Coach.

Instead of the Maquoketa red and white, the home stand was filled with grey t-shirts reading Southmoore Strong.

“I've never had to go through something like that and I know if I had to I would want people from the community and other communities to help me out,” said Cory Wirth, Maquoketa football player and member of Club hOpe.

After reading a Sports Illustrated article about the Southmoore Football team,a team that had more than 20 players lose their homes, when an EF-5 tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma, Maquoketa High School’s Club hOpe wanted to help.

“I just felt really sorry for them,” said Jacob Langenberg, a Maquoketa football player and member of Club hOpe.

“I felt sorry for all the football players and all the people who had lost their homes or family members,” said Jada Merrick.

Teaming up with Anamosa High School, at the football game in Maquoketa Friday September 20, 2013, money from selling t-shirts, bracelets, raffles, cotton candy, all going to Southmoore High School.
