Someone called 911 to help him but emergency crews could not get to a Jo Daviess County man before he was struck and killed in rural Stockton, Illinois.

A release from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office said someone called 911 just before 8:30 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2013 to report 88-year-old Walter Ludwisiak Sr. was on his knees in the roadway on Highway 20 east of North Canyon Park Road.

It was not immediately clear why he was in the road and kneeling.

While the caller was on the phone with dispatchers, a westbound vehicle approached the kneeling man.

“Due to Ludwisiak’s position in the roadway, the driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid striking Ludwisiak,” the statement said.

Mr. Ludwisiak, who is from Apple River, was pronounced dead at the scene.
