Davenport man’s body exhumed to confirm his death was murder

Three months after a missing Davenport man’s body was found, another man is accused of choking him to death.

Three months after a missing Davenport man's body was found, another man is accused of choking him to death.

After 48-year-old Kevin O'Connell had not been seen for about two weeks, police were called to check on him June 6, 2013.  They arrived at his apartment to find his body, in an advanced stage of decomposition, in his bed.  At the time, police said nothing at the scene appeared to be suspicious.

By August 2013, police were investigating an anonymous tip that connected 37-year-old Stephen Boeding to O'Connell's death.  Investigators were told Boeding was drinking with O'Connell, and that Boeding had choked O'Connell to death.

The evidence was so convincing, police got permission from his family to exhume O'Connell's body for an autopsy.  That autopsy confirmed O'Connell died by strangulation.

Police arrested Boeding Friday, September 13.  Boeding was charged with first-degree murder.

Boeding was held without bond in the Scott County Jail.
