Police say an Iowa officer was killed in a standoff with a wanted man.

According to a report by WHO, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) said during a standoff, Rockwell City police officer Jamie Buenting was shot and later died at a Lake City hospital.

WHO reported that the Iowa DCI said around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2013 the Calhoun County dispatch learned that a wanted man, 32-year-old Corey Trott who was wanted for assault was at a home on Pleasant Street.

Around 1:15 a.m. on Friday, officers, who had surrounded the home, noticed activity in the house and made contact with Trott, said WHO. At 1:40 a.m. officers approached the home and Oficer Buenting was hit by one shot allegedly fired by Trott.

Around 5:30 a.m., the Iowa State Patrol was called to help and Trott surrendered to authorities, according to the report. He is being held in the Sac County Jail on charges of first degree murder.

WHO said Officer Buienting had been a member of the Rockwell City Police Department for eight years and worked in law-enforcement for 12 years. He is survived by a wife and two children.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Jamie Buenting, his coworkers, and the entire Rockwell City community,” said Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. “This is a devastating loss that again reminds us of the harm faced on a daily basis by our brave public safety officers. We must never take for granted the work carried out by our public safety officers, and must be ever thankful to officers like Jamie Buenting for keeping our families safe.”
