Local firefighters injured fighting 11-acre brush fire

Three firefighters were treated at a hospital for heat-related injuries they suffered while battling a huge brush fire in Muscatine.

The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2013 in the 4200 block of South Highway 61.  A large grass field and corn field were burning out of control when firefighters arrived.

Muscatine Fire Chief Jerry Ewers said wind spread the fire north along the railroad tracks.  An out-building and several pieces of farm equipment were damaged by the fire when it moved to property at 4520 41st Street South.

Thirty-five firefighters from six fire departments battled the fire for hours.  It was brought under control just before 8 p.m.

One firefighter from Fruitland and two from Muscatine were treated at an area hospital for heat-related injuries.

The cause and dollar amount of damage from the fire remained under investigation.
