A body found by crews dredging the Mississippi River is thought to be that of a snowmobiler missing since January 2011.

A body found by crews dredging the Mississippi River is thought to be that of a man missing since January 2011.

Shawn Berthel, then 23, was one of two men whose snowmobiles went through the ice on the Maquoketa River on Saturday evening, January 22, 2011.  The other man, 34-year-old Brett Stalker, was able to pull himself from the frigid water.

Divers searched for Berthel but their efforts were unsuccessful.

A U.S. Corps of Engineers crew found a body while dredging in the middle of the channel on the Mississippi River north of Sabula, Iowa around noon Monday, September 9, 2013.

The body was inside a snowmobile suit according to a statement from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The body was sent for an autopsy to be performed in Ankeny, Iowa.
