A 26-year-old woman died of injuries she sustained when the SUV she rode in crashed in Knox County Just after midnight Saturday morning, September 7, 2013.

Police said Olivia Stewart was a passenger in a 1999 GMC Suburban driven by 32-year-old Cory Ward of Wataga.  Ward was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed south on U.S. 150 when he missed a curve and lost control at the Gates Bridge, about a quarter-mile south of Knox Road 1440.

Police said the Suburban went off the right side shoulder and went airborne.

“The vehicle travelled over a set of railroad tracks below and came to a final rest on the wooded south embankment in an upright position,” said a statement from Illinois State Police.

Stewart was taken to a hospital in Peoria where she was pronounced dead.

Ward was hospitalized with severe injuries.  Police said Ward was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
