Dozens of fish were killed after a water main broke, rushing chlorinated water into a Cedar Rapids stream.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, on Thursday, September 5, 2013 a broken water main leaked chlorinated water into McLoud Run. Roughly 70-75 trout were killed and found along a one-quarter to half-mile stretch of McLoud Run.

The DNR said chlorinated water got into the stream through a storm sewer. Officials do not know exactly how much of the water bled into the stream.

DNR biologists will return to the stream once water has cleared and attempt to determine if any more fish than originally counted were killed.

The water main break was discovered by Cedar Rapids officials and was repaired.
