A Dubuque man faces up to ten years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines after illegally possessing a firearm and running from and shooting at police.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, a federal court in Cedar Rapids convicted 30-year-old Daniel Lee Campbell of one count of possession of a firearm by a felon on Thursday, September 5, 2013.

Evidence at the trial showed that on June 10 around 11 p.m., Dubuque Police responded to reports of a man with a firearm. Upon arrival, police saw Campbell, who matched the description from the 911 call, and asked him to stop; Campbell ran away and pulled two guns from his pants, according to officials.

Police said Campbell threw one gun as he ran through an alley behind a church. He took the second gun and fired a shot over his shoulder at the officers behind him, and then threw the gun into a fenced-in area behind the church.

Police said Campbell hid in a pile of trash a couple blocks away and was apprehended roughly an hour-and-a-half after officers responded to the 911 call.

According to the U.S. Attorney, Campbell had been previously convicted in a U.S. District Court in 2007 for providing a false statement to a federal firearms licensee, a felony offense.
