Surrounding the 2013 Labor Day holiday, both state and local police will be holding extra enforcement and taking part in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled-Over Campaign.
The Illinois State Police said in an effort to push for zero fatalities, they will be enforcing speeding, driving under the influence, seat belts, and distracted driving- the four most common traffic violations.
According to the Illinois State Police, over the 2012 Labor Day weekend, more than 2,500 tickets were written for speeding, there were 625 seat belt violations, 45 distracted drivers, and 91 arrests for driving under the influence.
The Iowa State Police said they will be cracking down on drunk driving around Labor Day.
From Monday, August 26 – Sunday, September 8, state troopers will be taking part in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled-Over campaign.
In a statement from the Iowa State Police they revealed that during the 2012 Labor Day Holiday, there were four fatalities, but none were alcohol-related.
“Every year, about one third of all motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more drunk drivers or motorcycle operators,” said Chief of the Iowa State Patrol, Colonel David Garrison.
Moline Police will be taking part in the campaign as well, with enforcement that began in mid-August through Monday, September 2.
East Moline Police also began in mid-August enforcing seat belts, impaired driving, and speeders. A spokesperson from the department said that officers will be conducting Roadside Safety Checks at all hours.
