Fifty years ago, thousands of people gathered in the nations capital for the march on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr delievered his iconic "I have a dream" speech. Communities from coast-to-coast and here in the Quad Cities took time from to both to look back to that historic day and look ahead. Many know there's still work to be done.
On Wednesday, August 28 2013, people gathered in Davenport at Lafayette Park and in Galesburg at the Knox County courthouse, to remember Dr. King's speech and his message.
"I have a dream, that's always stuck in my head," said Paula Sanford, who attended the event in Galesburg.
Also among the crowd was Bob Clark and his wife who remember harder times.
"Things were pretty rough back in 68, racially," said Clark.
While there has been tremendous progress made since King's speech, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done.
"There's still a lot of people that are biased and bigoted and every chance we get we need to fight that," said Clark.
Everyone was gathering together to remember King, but also reminding others that his work isn't finished.
"Hope to get people to begin to understand don't become satisfied with what you have at this point , there's a lot of things gradually going back to where we were 50 years ago," said retired pastor, Gabriel Barber III.
