A man involved in a pursuit and shootout with police after he escaped from an Iowa prison facility is dead.

Rodney Eugene Long, 38, escaped from the minimum-security Clarinda Correctional Facility Friday, August 16, 2013.

Two days later, police said Long shot a deputy who stopped to talk to him as Long walked along a rural highway.  Long was accused of taking the deputy’s car and leading police from several jurisdictions on a pursuit that ended when the patrol car crashed and overturned.

Police exchanged gunfire with Long during the pursuit.

A statement issued by Iowa State Police Tuesday, August 20, 2013 said Long was dead and that no one was seriously injured in the incident that resulted in Long’s death.

At a press conference held later that morning, police said Long broke into a home in rural Bedford, Iowa, about 3/4 mile from where the pursuit ended, just after 10 p.m. Monday, August 19.

The retired couple living in the home were awakened by the break-in, and police said Long, who was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, disabled the phones in the house, took their cell phones and held the couple against their will there for about four hours before 71-year-old Jerome Mauderly used a shotgun to shoot and kill Long.

Mauderly’s 66-year-old wife then called police, who found Long face down on the kitchen floor of the couple’s home.

An autopsy was planned on the body of Long.  No other injuries were reported.
