Police said a teenager from Elmhurst, Illinois died when the vehicle he was driving overturned in a crash in Jo Daviess County.
Police said 18-year-old Noe Gomez was driving eastbound in a line of traffic on U.S. Route 20 just after noon Monday, August 19, 2013.
When Gomez tried to pass some of the vehicles in the line of traffic, another eastbound vehicle tried to pass at the same time and pulled in front of Gomez. Police said Gomez drove onto the shoulder on the north side of the road to avoid hitting that vehicle but Gomez’s vehicle continued into the ditch where it overturned multiple times and then hit a tree.
Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Two passengers in his car, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, were taken by ambulances to area hospitals.
