Beyond the Green Screen: Catch the Blue Moon

A rare “seasonal” blue moon is expected Tuesday night, August 20.

If you get a chance Tuesday night, August 20, 2013, look up at the moon.

At 8:45 CDT the full moon will reach its peak. With clear skies expected this shouldn’t be a problem.

What makes this moon special? It will be a “seasonal” blue moon. A “normal” Blue Moon is the third full moon of a four full moon season.

Most people think of the Blue Moon as the second full moon of the season due to a mistake that was made in 1946. An article in “Sky and Telescope” magazine incorrectly stated that the Blue Moon was the second full moon in a single month and the definition stuck.

The next “blue” moon won’t occur until 2015… and it won’t actually be blue 🙂
