Volunteers package over 22,000 meals for starving children

More than a dozen groups gathered in Davenport to help to fight hunger by packaging meals for Kids Against Hunger.

On Saturday, August 17, 2013, 18 teams of volunteers spent the morning packaging roughly 22,880 meals for Kids Against Hunger Your Quad Cities. Teams packaged meals in three rounds that lasted 1.5 hours a piece.

The meals were packaged by volunteers from Girl Scout troops, Cub Scout packs, church youth groups, church congregations, family groups, and more. Food will be sent to starving children in Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Quad Cities, according to a spokesperson from the Kids Against Hunger organization.

Meals from Saturday’s event could feed 22,880 children one meal, or 63 children for an entire year. A spokesperson from the organization said that every day 16,000 children die each day from starvation or related disease.
