Police: Stolen credit card helped nab suspected burglars

Police think they may be closer to solving a string of burglaries that plagued residents in Bettendorf and northeastern Davenport, Iowa.

Police think they may be closer to solving a string of burglaries that plagued residents in Bettendorf and northeastern Davenport, Iowa.

Police said at least seven break-ins were reported in two weeks in Bettendorf, and similar crimes were reported in nearby neighborhoods in Davenport.

In all of the cases, thieves got into the homes through unlocked doors or by cutting screens and climbing through open windows while residents slept inside the homes.

Police said a credit card stolen at one of the Davenport homes led them to arrest 28-year-old Roland Lam Jr. of Davenport and 22-year-old James Butler of Bettendorf.

An affidavit filed in connection with the case said when the burglary victim called to cancel the stolen credit card, the credit card company told them someone tried to use it at an ATM.  Tracing that record led police to the ATM surveillance video, which they used to identify Lam and Butler.

Both men were charged with second-degree burglary and with conspiracy.  Jail records show Lam was released after posting bond and Butler remained held in lieu of $10,000 bond.

A spokesman for Davenport Police said investigators from Davenport and Bettendorf were continuing to work to establish any possible connection among the burglaries.
