Bicyclist hit by vehicle in Pleasant Valley

A bicyclist was injured after being struck by a car while traveling down Great River Road in Pleasant Valley.

A 60-year-old Bettendorf man was injured after being struck by a car while traveling down Great River Road in Pleasant Valley.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash that happened before 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 on Great River Road in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, according to police. It is unknown which direction the car was heading at the time of the crash.

Police said the bicyclist, 60-year-old James Sanders of Bettendorf, was riding on the right side near the white fog line.

“A bicyclist has the same right to the road as a car and when you come up on a bicyclist, you need to allow that bicyclist the entire lane when you pass them, and that’s how the law reads,” said Lt. Tim Lane from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. “They’re entitled to that entire lane even though they don’t use that entire lane.”

Sanders was taken to the hospital for head injuries before being airlifted to another location, police say.

Police said the driver was issued citations for failure to maintain control and unsafe passing of a bicyclist.
