Law allows Illinois parents to join kids at school

As a traditional parade celebrated the beginning of a new school year, Governor Pat Quinn signed a new law to encourage parental involvement.

As a traditional parade celebrated the beginning of a new school year, Governor Pat Quinn signed a new law to encourage parental involvement.

The bill signing took place in Chicago on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the 84th annual Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic. The new law has allowed all Illinois school districts to designate the first Monday in October as “Bring Your Parents to School Day.”

Schools who choose to adopt the legislation may allow parents and guardians to attend class with their children. Parents would also have the option to meet with teachers and administrators during the day.

“A well-rounded education starts at home, and there is no better way to kick-off the school year right than with empowered parents,” said Governor Quinn.

The law takes effect January 1, 2014.
