QC cleanup volunteers find surprising items, recycle 15,000 pounds of garbage

In just one day, 1,500 volunteers in four-dozen locations around the Quad City area removed over 45,000 pounds of garbage.

In just one day, 1,500 volunteers in four-dozen locations around the Quad City area removed over 45,000 pounds of garbage.

The annual Xstream Cleanup was held on Saturday, August 10, 2013, where residents come out to help clean area waterways and illegal dump sites.

Collectively, the 1,564 volunteers worked nearly 4,400 hours to remove over 1,100 bags of trash. Among the trash volunteers found

  • 288 tires
  • 15 appliances
  • 9 bicycles
  • 16 pieces of furniture
  • 16 televisions
  • 14 mattresses

Other items, some surprising, were steel and iron pipes, car parts, wooden pallets, chairs, picnic tables, tents, sleeping bags, a shopping cart, water skis, a bowling ball, and a micro-SD memory card. 15,000 pounds of materials were recycled.

There were 48 cleanup sites on both sides of the river. On the Iowa side, volunteers helped in Bettendorf, Buffalo, Davenport, LeClaire, McCausland, and Lost Grove Lake and in Illinois volunteers were in Milan, Moline, Rock Island, and Silvis.

Volunteers at some locations in Bettendorf, Davenport, and Moline worked to remove invasive species as well as mark storm-drains to discourage illegal dumping.
