An Iowa man faces life in prison for his role in the kidnapping and shooting of a woman whose boyfriend wanted to break up with her.
Brittany Hamilton and Brian Williams were reportedly bound with duct tape and kidnapped from their Davenport home at about 4 a.m. October 8, 2012. Hamilton told police the kidnappers took them to a field near the Flying J Truck Stop. She was beaten, shot and left in a ditch and the kidnappers left, taking Williams with them.
Hamilton managed to walk to the Flying J to get help. Police said Williams did not appear to be hurt when they later found him, with duct tape on him, walking on West 58th Street.
Investigators determined Williams staged the abduction and shooting because he wanted to end his relationship with Hamilton. The men were also accused of setting a fire at the home of Hamilton’s new boyfriend. Williams and several other men were charged.
In a verdict delivered August 8, 2013, a jury found one of those men, 22-year-old Jeremy Garvin, of Marion, guilty of kidnapping, arson, willful injury and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony.
Scott County Attorney Mike Walton said Garvin faces life in prison for the kidnapping conviction, 25 years in prison for the arson conviction, and ten years each for the conspiracy and willful injury convictions. His sentencing was set for September 12.
Garvin remained held in the Scott County Jail.
