An odor of sulfur and an unattended box, discovered at the exact same time, led police to shut down the Centennial Bridge for about an hour.
The bridge was closed to all traffic in both directions from just after 4:30 p.m. until about 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 while a bomb squad investigated the report of a suspicious item on the bridge.
The day after the incident, a spokesman for the Davenport Police Department said they received a call just before 4:30 p.m. from someone who said there was a box that smelled like sulfur on the sidewalk on the bridge.
Police found a 2 x 3-foot cardboard box with no identifying marks on it, and brought in the bomb squad who determined the box was harmless. Inside the box were several empty gray plastic tubes.
The police department spokesman said the reported sulfur smell did not come from the box, but from an undetermined source and that the odor was no longer detectible.
