Port Byron is about to pay tribute to cycling in a big, big way.

The Port Byron riverfront is about to become home to a 30-foot copy of a statue that stands in Sparta, Wisconsin.  Sparta has claimed to be the “Bicycling Capital of America.”

Made by FAST Corporation in Sparta, Wisconsin, the statue is a recreation of one in Sparta that also pays tribute to cycling and to the Elroy-Sparta Trail, which is popular for bicycling.

Port Byron’s version, called Will B. Rolling, was commissioned and donated by Mayor Larry Bay.  Legend has it Bay is a cycling enthusiast who hopes the Great River Trail might also be a popular bicycling spot, like the Elroy-Sparta Trail.

The Will B. Rolling statue is expected to be installed along the Port Byron Riverfront in the 200 block of South Main, next to the Great River Trail.

Installation was set to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2013 but was delayed because of inclement weather.  No new date and time were announced.
