A proposal may require Iowa schools to proclaim a reason if they want to start the school year early.
Any school wishing to push-up their start date by seven days must have a reason, which shows significant negative educational impact, according to the August agenda of the Iowa State Board of Education. The reasoning has to be submitted with the school district’s request to the director.
Currently, schools are required to start during the week of September 1; each year some schools elect to start in August and end the year around Memorial Day.
The State Board of Education will be discussing the matter on Thursday, August 1. Any changes would take effect beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.
