An Iowa community spent a day traveling back in time to the 1800s.

On Sunday, July 28, 2013 in Long Grove, Iowa, residents gathered to experience the way life was more than one hundred years ago. Village Alive, held at Walnut Grove Pioneer Village, was an event filled with fun and education.

People gave demonstrations on the way things were done in the 1890s like blacksmithing and cabin cooking. Others made pottery, quilts and rope. A group called the Wapsi Wrangers reenacted scenes from old westerns.

“Between the late 60s and early 70s, seven of the top television shows were all westerns- Gun Smoke, Bonanza, such as that,” said Ernest Telkmeyer, a member of the Wapsi Wranglers. “We’re trying to keep our heritage alive.”
