The State of Iowa wants to add stiff penalties if it prevails in a lawsuit against Grain Processing Corporation in Muscatine.

The original action, filed in December 2011, accuses GPC of several water and air pollution control violations.

A citizen’s group called “Clean Air Muscatine” petitioned to join the lawsuit in April 2012.

The state’s department of natural resources has found more alleged violations since the lawsuit was filed, Iowa Attorney General Thomas Miller said in a statement. Miller filed an amended complaint in the case Thursday, July 25, 2013 which lists the additional alleged violations and asks for a penalty of (no more than) $5,000 per day for every day GPC violates pollution control requirements.

The case is set for trial starting September 23, 2013.
