Child recovering after sinking into sand dune

A young boy who was swallowed by a sand dune while vacationing with family in Indiana, is now on the road to recovery.

Six-year-old Nathan Woessner from Sterling, Illinois was covered by the sand dune that collapsed at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park on Friday, July 12, 2013, and was submerged under 11-feet of sand for over three hours.

Using heavy machinery, rescuers were able to get him out. He was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital and then transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. There, he has undergone several procedures to remove sand from his eyes and lungs.

Nathan’s grandfather, Don Reul, is a pastor at First Baptist Church in Galva, Illinois, and on Sunday, July 21, he told his congregation about his grandson’s accident and recovery.

Nine days later, Nathan is eating, talking, and playing, acting like a six-year-old boy, said Reul.

The ordeal is something Nathan’s family and that congregation can only describe as a miracle.

Doctors tell Nathan's family due to his quick recover, he could be out of the hospital in the next few weeks.
